The Intensity and Magnificence of the Rouna Falls

The Rouna Falls is a majestic waterfall that descends from the Sogeri Plateau. There are actually two parallel falls found at the Rouna Falls that remain captivating pieces of scenery to marvel at from afar. American 5th Air Force crews would come to this precise location by use of jeeps from their airfields to swim, trek and picnic during their free time. Today, a hydroelectric plant is found near the location.

The Sogeri Plateau is actually a means for the locals to escape the scorching heat of the capital of Port Moresby. While Port Moresby is ultimately dry and dusty, Sogeri on the other hand is mostly moist and green with its cool and airy mountain breeze. Its mountains, foothills, forests, rivers and streams have long been captured by many tourists as returning to the city makes them feel very much relaxed and energized. More than for the tourists, Sogeri is a means for residents of the capital to escape the once labeled “one of the world’s worst cities” and to get away from the stress that the capital city produces. With a quick 30-minute drive from Port Moresby, one can find one of the many jewels of Papua New Guinea.

Visitors who head to Sogeri to Ower’s Corner will usually make a quick stop at Rouna Falls. The drive from Port Moresby to Sogeri is indeed spectular. Only the locals will be able to spot such a beauty as travelers would most likely miss it entirely without having someone to point it out. Make sure to park just a few feet from the end of the unfenced cliff that hovers above the lush green valley hundreds of meters below.

Many claim that the Rouna Falls is similar to the Sisters Falls found in Brazil. The falls vapor down the side of the mountain from the top of the Sogeri Plateau down to the valley. Although it does not prove anything too spectacular, the amazement comes from the gushing sound of the falls that can only be heard from the top of the plateau. The sound proves to have the immense and powerful mass of water that gushes over the mountainous edge straight to the brown pool of water in the valley below. It then merges as part of the Laloki River.

The well-known Kokoda Trail also commences from the Sogeri Plateau. The Kokoda Trail was once the center of war between the Japanese and Allied troops. Today, the trail is marked by slippery slopes and jagged mountains surrounded by lush forests that make a great trek for Papua New Guinean tourists. Aside from the Kokoda Trail, another tourist destination found near the Sogeri Plateau is the Varirata National Park that lets visitors admire panoramic views of magnificent scenery.

Although you can’t do anything else but admire the beauty of the Rouna Falls from the Sogeri Road, it still remains a great stopover point that makes great photo ops. Admire the beauty and fascinating scenery of the falls and be captivated by its intense power.
