When traveling to an unknown city, you’ll most likely want to know what kind of clothing would be most appropriate. Here are brief notes on what to wear in Papua New Guinea:

  1. Although the weather in Papua New Guinea is extremely hot and humid, wearing lightweight long sleeves and long pants is necessary to avoid catching malaria. When visiting the Sepik Region, this is an absolute must as the area is famous for having thriving malaria-carrying mosquitoes.
  2. Please do not wear any designer shoes. For one, the country is pretty muddy so you wouldn’t want your shoes to go to waste. And on another note, wearing anything flashy or high-end will only attract the attention of local criminals, which is not something you’d want. This goes not only for shoes but for clothes and accessories as well.
  3. Bring mosquito repellant. If possible, slather your exposed body parts with mosquito repellant as to avoid catching any diseases or viruses. Repellants only work for about 4 hours at most so make sure to reapply as needed. If you sweat, reapplication should be done as well.
  4. When going to the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, a duffle bag or large backpack will suffice. It’ll also be best if your backpack has good waterproof lining. Basically, bring a bag that can be thrown into the back of trucks and boats. Bring something that can be sat on, rained on and generally abused.
  5. Despite being near the equator, Papua New Guinea can get cool during the evenings, especially at the Highlands, so it’s best to bring a jacket or a light sweater.
  6. When up at the highlands, your nights will remain restless without a mosquito net so make sure to pack one as well.
  7. Papua New Guinea is filled with forested areas, which means that ultra comfortable and sturdy shoes are a must. Hiking shoes are best but rubber shoes will be fine. For the ultra prepared ones, pack extra shoelaces or super glue as there is nothing worse than having to walk 20 kilometers with a shoe problem.
  8. If you’re traveling outside the major cities, women should stick to long skirts instead of pants, shorts or short skirts. This will cut down risks and offenses as the locals will see you as a commoner rather than a tourist. Showing thighs is also regarded as a “sexual come-on” in some parts of the country.
  9. Bring all the medical supplies you need. Some areas in Papua New Guinea may not have the kind of medication you need, so be prepared and pack your own little drugstore. It’s also best to talk to your doctor about shots that are needed before going to the country.
  10. When traveling, always bring a camera with you. Better check your battery twice as you wouldn’t want to miss anything to be caught on camera. Local children just love to pose in front of the camera and see themselves quickly emerge on display as you click away. Undoubtedly, you’ll come out with candid and funny shots of the local people.

Knowing what to wear in Papua New Guinea will help you be ready for any circumstances or occurrences during your trip. It’s always best to be ready when traveling so take note of these reminders.
